What framework should I learn

Framework conditions for productive learning

Good framework conditions do not primarily ensure that someone can learn better; on the contrary, they ensure that learning is hindered as little as possible. Good framework conditions ensure that concentration and the focus on the learning material is available and that one's own abilities can be fully exploited.

personal framework

Learning is hard work - the brain requires enormous amounts of energy: although its weight is only 2% of the body weight, it requires 20% of the energy used by the body. Anyone who wants to learn well needs at least one solid, warm meal every day with all the necessary vital substances, just like someone who works hard physically. Hunger and learning don't go together.

In general, physical well-being supports concentration: those who are well rested, rested, fit and recovered learn better than those who are tired, drained and exhausted. An extra hour of sleep is often more useful for studying than an extra hour of brooding over the books.

the space

Learning environments can be very different. There are people who need absolute rest, while others find some background murmur or classical music stimulating; some can learn very well outside in the garden in summer, others need a white wall in front of them so they are not distracted.

However, there are some principles that should be observed in any case:

light

The workplace should be well lit, but in such a way that the light does not dazzle. The lighting by sunlight is optimal; where lighting by the sun is not possible, a good artificial light source should be chosen. Neon lamps in particular are often poorly tolerated. Often a classic light bulb is more suitable, but there are also a selection of special lamps in specialist shops whose light is similar to sunlight. A workplace that is too dark is unnecessary and should be avoided.

noise

There are people who can work with practically any noise level - as long as it is constant. A sudden change from loud and quiet is definitely a distraction. Classical music is said to link the two halves of the brain so that the creative-creative and the intuitive-rational aspects can ideally work together. But choose the babbling chill-out CD rather than the dramatic operatic overtures. Some children can study well at the kitchen table while dad prepares the food and the siblings do handicrafts at the same time - in other families that doesn't work at all. There are students who appreciate the quiet, busy atmosphere of the university library; others learn better in a lively café with its buzz of voices. Find out which environment suits you best!

air

The brain is dependent on an ample supply of oxygen - smell prevents it from functioning properly. Ventilate regularly, always go outside for a short time, do a few light gymnastic exercises, dance to a rock piece of music, walk a bit, fill up with oxygen!

the workplace

A well-organized workspace is comfortable, but not too comfortable. If the size and furnishings of the chair and table force a constantly cramped posture, concentration and learning success are hindered as a result. Constantly tense or even cramped movement does not allow the blood to flow freely through all tissues and to supply them with sufficient oxygen. Very often these tensions affect the area of the shoulders and neck, so that the head suffers from a constant undersupply of blood, oxygen and nutrients.

Often, simple means such as seat cushions, a footstool or a sitting ball are sufficient to avoid these permanent bad postures. Sitting balls, in particular, are beneficial in order to keep the body constantly in easy movement and active balance. Every now and then a short massage of the shoulder muscles, but also of the feet, can bring real miracles of new freshness and relaxation.

An overly comfortable learning environment in a cozy armchair, on the other hand, leads to indolence, tiredness or even to sleep. It is also not possible in such comfortable armchairs or sofas to lay out the work material in front of you and quickly access everything you need.

Learning does not necessarily have to take place at a table. Why not sit on the floor, where there is plenty of space to spread all the material around you? Or learning vocabulary from cards while walking, either indoors or on a quiet path? The sloping surfaces of the medieval writing desks also made ergonomic sense - if you have a talent for craftsmanship, it shouldn't be too difficult to make such an attachment.

the work table

Be generous with the table surface! Those who can spread the learning material widely will also allow themselves to expand their own mind and thus learn faster and better. A light table surface that reflects light can help it get more light and reduce eye fatigue than a dark table.

Make sure that only what is really needed for learning is on the table and nothing more. It is annoying and distracting when you have to get up again and again to pick up a forgotten book, another pen, another piece of paper - make sure that all material is close at hand so that you can refer to this one Can concentrate on the learning task. On the other hand, avoid a cluttered table. It is difficult to bring your thoughts into order when there are still piles of papers on the table, or stands with photos, or decorations, or personal memories ... direct all objects that are not directly related to the learning task from.

The fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld took this method to the extreme. He deliberately placed his desk in front of a white wall. He explained that whatever he could see - be it a view from the window or a picture on the wall - he would be influenced, which he did not want. But if he looks at a white wall, he can fully immerse himself in the drawings that are to be created.

Pen, paper, ruler, exercise book ... the material

Every craftsman who believes in himself takes pride in owning the best tools and cares for them with loving care. Learners should do exactly the same! Scratching fountain pens, leaking ballpoint pens, breaking pencils, felt-tip pens that no longer write, smeary erasers, blunt pencil sharpeners and holey documents ensure a constant level of stress that doesn't have to be. Pencils of suitable hardness and good quality, new felt-tip pens, and paper that is easy to write on are a sign of appreciation for yourself and for the learning process you have embarked on.

The maintenance of the material can be used as a little pause meditation - carefully sharpening a pencil so that it becomes as sharp as the learning mind is a most pleasant, enjoyable and inspiring break from actual learning. Changing the ink cartridge is accompanied by a pleasant feeling: I've already achieved so much, I'm making progress! - Choosing a virginal white piece of paper and laying it down in front of you gives the mind openness to whatever may come. Being able to learn something is a pleasure and a privilege - and that can manifest itself down to the smallest details. It is worth investing in good material - because a pencil or colored pencil is used for a long time, so that the costs are negligible in the long term. With all good quality materials, it is also possible to purchase individual pens from specialist retailers, while cheap products are often only available in sets.

Keep body and soul together

What also belongs on every workplace is a glass of water or a cup of tea and something to nibble on. A constant, regular supply of fluids helps to keep the body fluids moving and thus provides the head with an optimal supply of energy. Small nibbles ensure the supply of nutrients. Dried fruits and nuts are ideal - the classic trail mix - but there can also be a piece of chocolate that gives the happiness hormones a little kick. Preference should be given to things that are easy to eat, that do not crumble and that cannot leave stains, so that concentration can stay on the subject matter and does not have to switch to eating and drinking.
