The best smartphones for gamers in 2021: These phones have power

Some just like to play with their mobile phones from time to time, others really gamble through the night. High-performance models are particularly in demand for the latter. Which gaming smartphones are potential winners in 2021? We introduce you to seven promising devices.

Gaming smartphones can also be classified into two categories in 2021. On the one hand, manufacturers offer models that deserve the name because they are geared towards the best possible gaming experience. On the other hand, there are "regular" cell phones that are good for gaming:

  • Nubia RedMagic 5G
  • Asus ROG Phone 5
  • Xiaomi Black Shark 4 (Pro)
  • Lenovo Legion Phone Duel
  • Oppo Find X3 Pro
  • Apple iPhone 12
  • Samsung Galaxy S20 FE

One of the best gaming smartphones in 2021: Nubia RedMagic 5G

If you are passionate about gaming, the Nubia RedMagic 5G is the best choice. There are various reasons for this: from the 144 Hertz display to the cooling system. The former convinces gamers with an extremely smooth refresh rate. When it comes to water cooling, the RedMagic smartphone is also based on high-quality PCs.

The exterior of the RedMagic also has a gamer look, because the switches are arranged in such a way that you can use them as shoulder buttons like on a controller. And vibration effects ensure particularly authentic gaming experiences.

Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 | 8 cores up to 2.84 gigahertz

Giant of gaming smartphones in 2021: Asus ROG Phone 5

The Asus ROG Phone 3 is already a real highlight for gamers. But with the recently announced ROG Phone 5, Asus has gone one better. The cell phone is visually reminiscent of its predecessor and also scores with a battery capacity of 6,000 mAh.

The ROG Phone 5 impresses with a significantly increased charging speed: 65 watts instead of "only" 30 watts as with the ROG Phone 3. In addition, several antennas are built in so that you always have a stable connection when gaming. And: the gaming smartphone supports the new 5G cellular standard.

How good the hardware is, otherwise depends on which model of the ROG Phone 5 you choose: 8, 12 or even 16 gigabytes of RAM are possible. For the internal storage space, on the other hand, you can choose between 128, 256 and 512 gigabytes. In April 2021, the ROG Phone 5 Pro will also appear, which also comes with an adjustable display on the back and two additional shoulder button sensors.

Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 | 8 cores up to 2.842 gigahertz

ASUS ROG Phone 5 is here:
-144 Hz display / 1 ms
-Snapdragon 888
-8/12/16 GB RAM, 128/256 GB storage
-6000 mAh battery
-2 USB-C ports (bottom + right) + 3.5 mm
-AirTrigger on the frame and physical triggers on the (optional) AeroActive 5 Cooler
-RGB-LED logo

However, the ROG Phone 5 has one problem: According to the test by JerryRigEverything, it is not particularly stable. In the endurance test, it takes a lot of damage - accordingly, you should plan a decent protective cover in the purchase. And this is not cheap: The Asus gaming smartphone costs almost as much as an iPhone 12 Pro Max in the deluxe configuration.

5G gaming flagship for 2021: Xiaomi Black Shark 4 (Pro)

With the Black Shark 4 and the Black Shark 4 Pro, Xiaomi is putting the competition under great pressure. The Black Shark 4 is a gaming smartphone with strong hardware for a small budget; The Pro version, on the other hand, is an excellent alternative to the Asus ROG Phone 5.

The Black Shark 4 (Pro) has a battery with a capacity of 4,500 milliamper hours, which according to the manufacturer can be charged in 15 minutes. Also on board is an E4 AMOLED display from Samsung with a refresh rate of 144 Hertz. The pressure-sensitive shoulder buttons ensure better handling when playing mobile games. The gaming smartphones use JoyUI 12.5, a special Android user interface. This provides many resources for your favorite hobby and ensures smooth gaming sessions.

The Black Shark 4 Pro uses passive cooling, which is very effective. Compared to the Black Shark 4, temperature differences of up to 18 degrees are possible. This ensures stable performance even in particularly long games. The Black Shark 4 Pro is clearly superior to the basic version in terms of performance. Because despite the lower maximum clock rate, the top chipset Snapdragon 888 is stronger than the Snapdragon 870.

As is typical for Xiaomi, the low price is a challenge: In China, the Black Shark 4 with 6 gigabytes of RAM and 128 gigabytes of flash memory costs the equivalent of just under 320 euros. The Black Shark 4 Pro is available in two versions: optionally with 8 gigabytes of RAM and 256 gigabytes of memory for the equivalent of 515 euros; or with 16 gigabytes and 512 gigabytes for the equivalent of 685 euros. However, the actual euro prices at the market launch in Europe are likely to be slightly higher.

Processor (Black Shark 4): Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 | 8 cores up to 3.20 gigahertz
Processor (Black Shark 4 Pro): Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 | 8 cores up to 2.842 gigahertz

Without compromise: Lenovo Legion Phone Duel

No compromise! That was apparently the route of the developers, because the Legion Phone Duel sets itself apart with a strong technical interior. Here, too, the gameplay is happy about a refresh rate of 144 Hertz. In addition, the touch latency should be in the ultra-fast range.

Many games require quick and precise reactions. Lenovo wants to optimize this with its gaming smartphone for 2021, for example with ultrasonic shoulder buttons and 3D motion sensors, while the rubberized back ensures stability. The Legion Phone Duel also has two batteries with a capacity of 2,500 mAh each.

Flagship for gamers: Oppo Find X3 Pro

With the Oppo Find X3 Pro, the manufacturer released a flagship in early 2021 that does not have to shy away from comparison with other gaming smartphones. For example, it has a large, high-resolution display: 6.7-inch AMOLED and 1,440 x 3,216 pixels. There is also the Snapdragon 888 and 12 gigabytes of RAM.

With a capacity of 4,500 mAh, the battery is not particularly large, but you can fully charge it in just 32 minutes thanks to the quick charge function. If you use your smartphone not only for playing but also for taking photos, the Oppo Find X3 Pro also offers you an excellent quadruple camera: the main lenses both have a resolution of 50 megapixels. However, so much high end has its price: The Oppo Find X3 Pro is about as expensive as the Galaxy S21 Ultra or the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Not only suitable for gaming: iPhone 12

The heart of the iPhone 12 is, how could it be otherwise, the chip. Apple installs the so-called A14 Bionic in the standard model and advertises it as the fastest smartphone chip. That alone is a good reason to add the device to the list of gaming smartphones for 2021.

The 6.1-inch display is undoubtedly one of the most advanced - and yet it is somewhat overshadowed by the other models. The "Super Retina XDR" screen uses OLED pixels for an optimized contrast ratio and better color accuracy, but the screen rate is "only" 60 Hertz. Even if the iPhone 12 falls a little compared to other devices: Apple fans will definitely consider it as a gaming smartphone in 2021.

Playing with the front: Samsung Galaxy S20 FE

With the Galaxy S20 FE, Samsung has released an all-rounder that also satisfies gaming enthusiasts. Not least because of the comparatively large battery with 4,500 mAh, which can make longer gaming sessions possible. The abbreviation “FE” in the name of the smartphone stands for “Fan Edition”.

The screen of the Galaxy S20 FE is also impressive: the immersive 6.5-inch display is excellent. The offshoot of the Galaxy S20 also offers you good performance and high data speed. At 120 Hertz, the refresh rate of the display is somewhat lower than that of many “real” gaming smartphones, whose screens support 144 Hertz.

Processor: Exynos 990 | 8 cores up to 2.73 gigahertz
