How to improve your detective skills
sofatutor magazine student
He's a great genius - Sherlock Holmes. Although the detective is a character from a novel, there is a lot that can be learned from him. Find out here how to get as smart as Sherlock Holmes!
You read through vocabulary a hundred times, but immediately forgot about it. You look at the clock and a minute later you don't know what time it is. Or you put the key down somewhere and look for it later in vain. All of this is not due to a bad memory, but rather a lack of attention.
I am of the opinion that a person's brain is originally like a small empty attic room that you have to furnish with the furniture that is convenient for you. With fun to learning success - that's how it's done
“You see, but you do not observe,” Sherlock Holmes once said to his friend Dr. Watson. By that he meant that Watson sees things but does not consciously perceive them. Most of us do. The vocabulary and the time have been seen, but not consciously looked at. You were probably distracted and thought of something else. Even with the key, your mind was elsewhere, so that the brain did not register where you put it.
When you are consciously in the present and not doing several things at the same time, the brain works best. So you have to force yourself to be aware of things. If you z. For example, if you put the key down somewhere, you should put your full concentration on it, briefly make a mental note of where the key is and only then do something else. Then you don't have to waste time searching because the brain has memorized where the key is.
The same goes for learning. Instead of reading the same vocabulary over and over again, lost in thought, you should consciously focus on the words and push away all other thoughts.
Train concentration - exercises
In order to be in the present at the crucial moment and not drift off with your thoughts, you have to train your concentration. You can do that by counting letters. To do this, take a newspaper or your school book and count all "e" that appear in a paragraph. To make it even more difficult, you can count two or three different letters at the same time, e.g. B. "e", "u" and "n".
You can do a similar exercise on the radio or television. Count certain words that appear there, e.g. B. all "and". If this is too easy for you, you can count several words, e.g. B. all “and”, “the” and “with”.
Smart like Sherlock Holmes
As you can see, with a little practice it isn't that difficult to become as smart as Sherlock Holmes. Just always remember that a calm mind is most effective and do it like the detective: Observe!
Yoga for the head
Exercises such as yoga, autogenic training, and progressive muscle relaxation can also help to keep your concentration trained. You can find more tips in our article Concentration - nine exercises against distraction.
