The buccinator muscle has its origin on the outer surfaces of the alveolar processes of the upper and lower jaw, approximately in the area of ​​the three molars, as well as on the crista buccinatoria. Additional fiber strands arise dorsally from the front of the pterygomandibular raphe, which separates the muscle from the superior pharyngeal constrictor muscle.

2.2 Approach

The fibers converge towards the corner of the mouth and intertwine here in the modiolus with the fibers of the orbicularis oris muscle and with each other. Some of them also shine into the skin of the upper and lower lip.

The buccinator muscle is covered by the buccopharyngeal fascia and is therefore the only mimic muscle that is covered by its own fascia. It is in close anatomical relationship with the body of fat on the cheeks (corpus adiposum buccae), which separates the muscle from the ramus mandibulae and the muscle masseter. The mucous membrane of the mouth connects to the inside. Opposite the second upper molar, the duct of the parotid gland, the ductus parotideus, penetrates the muscle.

The buccinator muscle shapes the contour of the cheek and contracts the cheek. He pushes the food between the rows of teeth during the chewing process.
