Mathematics, computer science and physics provide the basis for understanding the material world and the world of information. They form the basis for a wide range of value creation processes in every modern society. The faculty's mission is to ensure research and education at the highest international level. It prepares future top performers for their activities in industry, research and schools.

The Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics combines three departments with similarities in terms of content and method and thus offers the organizational framework to optimally use the great synergy potential in research and teaching.

Research-led study plans with direct connection to focal points and research projects are a central concern. The MIP faculty is in charge of two of the five main research areas of the University of Innsbruck, the FSP Physics and the FSP Scientific Computing, and has a first-class international reputation. Excellence in research is the engine for an attractive study location on the technology campus.

The MIP faculty offers a bachelor, master, teacher and PhD degree in each of the three areas of mathematics, computer science and physics. The specialist training and subject didactics training of future teachers is offered at the MIP faculty in cooperation with the faculty for teacher training. All studies are of the highest international level and correspond to the subject-specific European standards.

The MIP faculty has an experienced team of lecturers and thus offers very good study conditions. The students are imparted solid theoretical basic knowledge, enriched with a variety of practice-oriented topics. Students of the master’s and PhD programs have the opportunity to do their master’s thesis or their PhD program in the internationally recognized research groups.

The faculty offers an ideal environment for successful top-level research, especially for doctoral candidates.

Content


As a universal language, the mathematics the common foundation of the natural and engineering sciences. For example, mathematics is used to model natural phenomena and formulate technical problems. Developing solutions for both internal and external mathematical problems is one of the core tasks of mathematics. In the context of digitization, mathematics is an essential building block for future-oriented professional fields.

Like no other science changes them Computer science our living and working world. The degree in computer science combines comprehensive training in information and communication technologies with the teaching of mathematically-based problem-solving skills and analytical thinking. Graduates of the computer science degree are able to develop technologies and information models creatively and responsibly in science and practice, as well as to develop innovative applications.

physics forms the foundation for all areas of high technology in our modern society. A deep understanding of natural physical processes together with the pursuit of knowledge form the basis for numerous applications: computers, satellites, GPS navigation, lasers, modern imaging in medicine and that
Internet grew out of basic physical research. Studying physics prepares the next generation to find answers to the important challenges of the future, such as climate, the environment and the energy question. However, fundamental topics such as the origin of the universe or the wondrous world of quanta are also dealt with.

The subject-related scientific pre-vocational training for teaching at secondary schools (polytechnic schools, (new) middle schools, general secondary schools, middle and higher vocational schools) takes place in the subjects offered.

The faculty offers that Digital Science optional package (30 ECTS-Credits). This imparts basic knowledge of programming and data analysis in order to optimally prepare students for digital challenges during and after their studies.

Graduates of the bachelor's programs offered at the MIP faculty have, in addition to the scientific career path, excellent future prospects and career opportunities through a postgraduate master’s and PhD degree.
Graduates of the Bachelor's degree in Mathematics are in great demand in the high-tech industry, in companies for telecommunications and information technology, in the logistics sector, in banks, insurance companies and statistical offices. You are characterized by special problem-solving skills and specially trained analytical and systematic thinking.

Graduates of the bachelor's degree in computer science are in demand as specialists in almost all industries worldwide: software development, IT consulting, telecommunications, industry, medicine, banks, insurance, financial service providers, logistics, trade, entertainment industry and tourism as well as service providers of all kinds range from the development, adaptation and maintenance of hardware, software and network solutions to analytical and advisory activities.

Graduates of the bachelor's degree in physics are in great demand in the entire field of science and technology, both in industry and in research. In particular, the ability to solve problems independently is what sets her apart for a very wide range of professional fields.

Graduates of a secondary level teacher training course (general education) with a bachelor's and master's degree can be accepted for school service in the respective general education subjects of the secondary level.
