What does reiwa mean in Japanese?

Greetings at the beginning of the new "Reiwa" era (May 2, 2019)

Dear Sirs and Madames,

On May 1, 2019, His Majesty Emperor Naruhito ascended the chrysanthemum throne as the new Tenno. In connection with this event, a new era began in Japan under the name "Reiwa". The official German translation of "Reiwa" is "beautiful harmony" and means that our culture can flourish when we humans bring our souls together in a beautiful way.

In this year, in which we are also celebrating the 150th anniversary of the friendly relations between Japan and Austria, S.E. Mr. Federal Chancellor Kurz in February and I.E. Ms. Federal Minister for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs Dr. Kneissl visited Japan in March. A visit to Japan by S.E. Federal President Van der Bellen and numerous events to promote active bilateral exchange at all levels are still planned for this year. I would like to take this opportunity to work with you, ladies and gentlemen, to further deepen the relationship between our two countries.

On the occasion of this solemn occasion, I wish that under the rule of the new imperial couple, a good new age may dawn for Japan and Austria too!

Kiyoshi Koinuma
Ambassador of Japan to Austria
